The Door County Peninsula and surrounding Islands took its name from the straits between the mainland and Washington Island, known as “Death’s Door”, a translation from the French voyageur term “La Porte des Morts”. We were first set apart from Brown County on February 11, 1851. At that time, Door County included what is now Kewaunee. Originally, the County Seat was in Baileys Harbor. It was later changed to Sturgeon Bay, where it is today. Our beautiful Door County Peninsula boasts 250 miles of exciting shoreline. The shoreline varies from fabulous sand beaches to sheer limestone bluffs. Five Door County island (formally called Potowatomi Islands and more recent history, The Grand Traverse Islands) belonged to the Northwest Territory. When the Northwest Territory was broken into four states, Washington Island, Plum Island, Detroit Island, Pilot Island, and Rock Island became part of Door County. Door County is totally surrounded by the fresh water of Lake Michigan. Our location allows us to enjoy the beautiful sunrises over Lake Michigan to our east, and the spectacular sunsets over the waters of Green Bay to our west.

My husband, Bob, and I moved to Door County for the same reason many of my clients and customers do - for a change in lifestyle. We are fortunate enough to live where we can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere created by the forests, bluffs, meadows and the lake. The beauty of our peninsula is unmeasured.

Recreational activities on the peninsula include sailing, fishing, golfing, swimming, biking, hiking trails through all five of our State Parks, cherry and apple picking, and numerous festivals and art fairs. In the quiet winter months, visitors and residents enjoy the groomed cross-country ski trails and snowmobile trails as well as the horse-drawn sleigh rides.

Cosmetic Improvements >Handle Needed Repairs Early
There is a standard chain of events that occurs when an offer comes in on a home. After a meeting of the minds, the buyer often brings in a home inspector who may find a few items that need to be repaired. The real estate agent gives the homeowner a list of the requested repairs. What comes next?
In most transactions, the seller will take care of the repairs. Many sellers wait until the week before the closing to call someone to do the work, because they want to be sure that they are going to make it to the closing table before they spend money on repair work. If you are responsible for making repairs to a home you are selling, make sure you have the work done well in advance of the closing date by licensed professionals who will stand behind their work. If the work is done at the last minute and is incomplete or unsatisfactory, it could cause complications at the closing. You should provide the buyers with all the receipts and the names of the persons to contact in case there is a problem with the repairs.
