The Secret of the Gnomes along Gibraltar Road

After our Thanksgiving dinner, Bob and I went out for a drive. We came upon our friend and former Fish Creek Grocery owner, Mrs. Norz. She was walking near her home on Gibraltar Road. Mrs. Norz told us of the secret Gnomes her grandchildren had found years ago. When her grandchildren come to visit, they leave notes at the Gnome's home and with every note, the grandchildren receive a reply. However, each year, about this time in November, the replies do not come, as the Gnomes take leave. They head to the North Pole to help Santa. Mrs. Norz was out looking to see if the Gnomes had left. Fortunately for us, they were just packing to leave. Bob grabbed his camera and asked permission to take a picture or two. The Gnomes graciously granted him permission. After the photos, the Gnomes wished us well and off they trotted telling Mrs. Norz they'd return after the holidays.

Gayle lives in the western suburbs of Chicago. She writes mostly non-fiction. According to Gayle, "My special interests are history and ornithology (especially parrots) but I will chase after whatever catches my fancy. I love to research, and find that is my favorite part of the writing experience."

THE EAGLE...

When it rains, most birds head for shelter; the eagle is the only bird that, in order to avoid the rain, starts flying above the clouds...



An amazing tidbit about the Eagle's eyesight: The eagle can probably identify a rabbit moving almost a mile away. That means that an eagle flying at an altitude of 1000 feet over open country could spot prey over an area of almost 3 square miles from a fixed position.　


No wonder God wants us to spread our wings and soar with eagles.　Perhaps our founders knew that one day we as a people and nation would have need for this symbol when the Eagle was chosen as a symbol of our Republic.

I was able to take a peaceful walk through the Village of Egg Harbor this morning....the morning after Egg Harbor's Pumpkin Patch Festival. Below are some photos of a few of the many colorful decoration I found throughout the Village.

The fall is a beautiful time to visit AND LIVE in Door County. Historically, it has been the best time for our local real estate market as well! Now, more than ever, with interest rates at their all time low, it is the ideal time to take advantage of some excellent buys!

Don’t you just love summertime?  There is nothing like being in Door County during the summer!  It’s time to get that barbecue grill fired up, pull up the lawn chairs, invite the family over for a cookout, sip on some lemonade and watch the kids play in the sprinklers.  It just doesn’t get any better than that, does it?  With all the cookouts, hot summer weather, fireworks and water activities, we want to remind you to be safe and healthy this summer season!  Here are some “common-sense” safety tips to keep in mind that I received from my friend, Verl Workman:

 

  • Drink lots of water to stay hydrated (sorry folks, sodas don’t count!)
  • Remember to always use sunscreen, wear a hat and cover up or go inside during the hottest part of the day (11 am to 4 pm typically).
  • Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold!  Items containing mayo, eggs, or dairy products can quickly go bad in the summer heat.  When in doubt, throw it out----A trip to the ER with food poisoning isn’t much fun.
  • Always fully cook all meats on the grill.
  • Use mosquito repellent to keep those pesky bugs at bay.

  • If you drink alcoholic beverages—please drink responsibly and don’t drive.
  • And remember, alcohol will dehydrate you—so make sure to drink plenty of water as well.
  • If you must exercise outside—make sure you do so early in the morning or late in the evening—and carry plenty of water with you.
  • Heat stroke can be a deadly condition—make sure you know the symptoms:  http://www.medicinenet.com/heat_stroke/article.htm
  • Only use “legal” fireworks—and if you live in a restricted area for fireworks, follow your community regulations!  The fire department has enough to do without people setting off fireworks where banned.
  • A responsible adult should supervise all fireworks activities.
  • Never give fireworks to young children.
  • If you’re boating, please wear your flotation vests—even the best swimmer needs to!
  • Keep your pets safe and sound inside the house—fireworks are extremely loud to the sensitive ears of an animal.  During firework season, many animals left outside get frightened and run away—the Humane Society always reports an increase in lost animals this time of year.
  • Make sure your pet has plenty of fresh water at all times to help it cope with the heat—and never, ever leave a pet unattended in a vehicle—inside temperatures can top 120 degrees in about 30 minutes—even if you’re parked in the shade.

This morning, Bob & I took a ride through Peninsula State Park.  There was 6 inches of freshly fallen snow and we were blessed to be the first tracks!

google map to real pro systemsAs they do every year, Bob Erickson and George Bisbee spent a few hours last Friday ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Not only did they have a fun time seeing and chatting with lots of old friends, as well as making new ones, Thrivent Financial was doing matching funds up to $125,000, for our district! By the end of the day, the buckets contained over $220,000, and with the matching funds, totaled over $340,000!!!!! That is a whole lot of money that goes to those in need. A HUGE THANKS goes out to ALL Salvation Army Bell Ringers!

Thanksgiving Day in Jacksonport

Bob and I had such a wonderful day on Thanksgiving Day; I wanted to share some of our day with you. We have a ritual that begins with breakfast at Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant. We then take a walk. This year we walked in Whitefish Bay Dunes State Park and Cave Point. It was spectacular! There has been so much moisture that liken has grown on the trees. The trees looked as if they were budding! Lake Michigan’s waves were huge and crashing on the shore.

   

   

After our walk, we went to the Jacksonport’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. We have not missed one of their parades! Each year the parade gets a little larger, but it is still so short that the participants turn around and make another pass through town!

   

Door County Century Ride

The Door County Century began in 1980 and has become one of Wisconsin's most popular rides. An average of 2,000 cyclists participate in the 30 mile, 50 mile, 70 mile, or 100 mile (Century) ride. The ride begins and ends at the Door County Fairgrounds, just north of Sturgeon Bay. Cyclists make their way from Sturgeon Bay progressively further up the peninsula. There are rest stops spaced along the way that provide food, refreshments, and rest room facilities.

This year's ride is on September 12, 2010, a time when the crowds of summer have departed and the rush of the Fall color season has not yet begun. Plus the weather is perfect! Door County is a cyclist's paradise. Scenic backroads blanket the peninsula and there's 300 miles of shoreline.
